Review: Japanese Folktales Series 4 through 6 Now Available on iTunes Stores Worldwide

Japanese Folktales “The Listening Hood,” “Princess Hachikazuki,” and “The Mouse Wedding.”

Released and translated by acttill, the Japanese Folktales Series 4 through 6: "The Listening Hood," "Princess Hachikazuki," and "the Mouse Wedding" have been released on iTunes for both iPad and iPhone users. Beautifully Illustrated by Taniel, who worked on the Nintendo DS game A Witch's Tale, readers can now experience these three timeless Japanese folktales for $2.99 per story.

EN kikimimi 0003

"The Listening Hood": This story originates from northern Japan. A long, long time ago, people used to live in harmony with nature and the animals around them. This story represents their wish to communicate with their surroundings and animals.

hachi EN 0002

"Princess Hachikazuki": In this story, a young girl from a wealthy family in Kawachino Kuni (now Osaka) is made to wear a pot on her head by her gravely ill mother. When the mother passes away, the pot becomes permanently attached to the girl's head, and she becomes known as "Princess Hachikazuki" ("hachi" meaning "pot," and "kazuki" meaning "wear"). So begins a life of challenge and hardship for the young girl...

EN nezuyome 005

"The Mouse Wedding": When a mouse girl reaches a certain age, she asks her father to find a husband for her. The father mouse, wanting nothing more than the very best for his precious daughter, goes searching for the very strongest beings in the world to ask them to marry his child, starting with the Sun itself.

As someone who has a deep appreciation for Japanese storytelling, whether it's through video games or anime, I was particularly impressed with how the simplicity of the characters and their stories were able to transcend the cultural boundaries between here and Japan. These tales captivated me greatly with their sheer beauty and moral storytelling, despite the fact that it didn't take anymore than five minutes to read a single one.

From the tale of the old man learning to live in harmony with nature to the more romantic tales "Princess Hachikazuki" and "the Mouse Wedding," all three stories have been passed on from one generation to the other as important pieces of literature. As a result, it was very easy to see why Japanese studios such as KEY and Studio Ghibli often dig deep into their own cultural roots as inspiration for their products. Their stories all feel very rich and unique, which helps readers feel the history behind each of the carefully crafted words.

Adding to the ambiance are the illustrations from Taniel, in which readers can tell were all painstakingly loved. The simple illustrated strokes bring the vivid tales to life, turning each page into wonderful works of art that can be enjoyed by both children and adults alike. My favorite set would easily have to be from "the Mouse Wedding," which added a flair of humanity to the fantastical story of a family of mice looking for love in all the wrong places.

Whether you're a fan of Japanese media or just timeless folktales, the ability to enjoy these tales over and over again on a digital platform like the iPad makes it a very convenient way to indulge yourself within a small part of the Japanese culture on the fly.

Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka? (Blu-ray/DVD) Review

review-kore-wa-zombie-desu-ka-01

Ever wonder what would happen if you were to give an undead zombie magical girl powers? Then wonder no more. Serving as the whimsical premise behind FUNimation's and Studio Deen's 2011 supernatural series, Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka? (lit. Is this a Zombie?), the anime tells the tale of a zombie high school student, by the name of Ayumu Aikawa, whom suddenly finds himself in the midst of unusual circumstances after he is mysterious murdered by a serial killer. He is revived by the deadpan necromancer Eucliwood Hellscythe who moves in with him which is followed by a series of happenstances that threaten to interrupt Ayumu's "normal" life.

Recently recently released by FUNimation on Blu-ray/DVD as part of their anime classics line, the series still remarkably holds up decently by today's standards as a result of its off-the-wall cast of characters, despite its rather paint-by-numbers shonen formula. Based off of the series of light novels by Shinichi Kimura, in addition to the main protagonists we have the well-endowed vampire ninja Seraphim, the genius mahou shoujo girl Haruna and Ayumu's "bride-to-be" Tomonori. Each of the girls feels unique and gets her own respective turn in the spotlight, perfectly paced throughout the first season's twelve episodes as they battle creatures known as megalos. Throughout the series, Ayumu learns to care for each of the girls in his life which ultimately culminates in the series climax which threatens his new normal.

review-kore-wa-zombie-desu-ka-02

Where the series is at its best, however, is when they're logically trying to piece together the utter mayhem on-screen. Whether its trying to rationally explain why Ayumu became a 'maso-shoujo' (a pun based off of the term 'mahou-shoujo') to having a pop idol contest in the last episode of the season, the characters are just as bewildered by the circumstances as the audience, making it a fun and often laugh-out-loud ride through Ayumu's posthumous life. Although parts of the series are often predictable, its blend of comedy and its cast of characters do help to overlook this fact. My favorite scenes were often the ones where Ayumu would take things out of context and have delusional dreams about Eu since she was never able to speak for outwardly for herself.

Visually, the re-release of the series takes a graphical leap in 1080p Blu-ray. Where the original DVD product originally had tons of grain and flooded out colors when upscaling, the colors are vibrant and pop out benefiting the series' rather dark palette. Of course, there are also plenty of lighter scenes that stand out as well, particularly the winter scenes towards the end of the series. The snow looks gorgeous with the amount of detail that the animators put into the scenes which are brought to life with the help of the high-def release. For fans of Studio Deen and Zombie, this is the definitive release of the series.

review-kore-wa-zombie-desu-ka-03

With tons of hijinks, cross-dressing jokes and fan service make no mistake about it, Kore wa Zombie desu ka? plays out exactly like how you think it will. The series never tries to present the audience with any pretentious messages about undead civil rights or any existentialist views on death, and it doesn't need to. It's a rudimentary shonen series that never makes any apologies for what it is. Despite its predictability however, it remains an engaging enough series to finish it all the way until the end. Most importantly, with its colorful cast of off-the-wall characters and oddball take on the supernatural the series never forgets the reason why audiences are watching it in the first place: because it's fun.

The O-rating B-

What I Loved:

● One word: Eu

● Enough off-the-wall comedy to make even the dead laugh

● Decent character development leading into a satisfying conclusion

What I Hated:

Story was predictable, while the characters are based off of archetypes rather than anything new

Impressions: "Yoshiki Classical World Tour" in San Francisco

$

impressions-yoshiki-classical-world-tour-san-francisco

A night at the opera...er, not really. This night was one where the world famous Japanese composer and songwriter Yoshiki performed at the Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco as the second stop on his "Yoshiki Classical World Tour." Yoshiki, the band leader and drummer for legendary group X Japan, is a trained classical pianist and here his headbanging style gave way to a more graceful sounds of strings.

Unfortunately my memory card seems to have died right before the concert started. I personally would like to think that Yoshiki's awesomeness could not be contained in such a small digital form, so in the absence of photos I will have to do my best to describe it with words.

Imagine, if you would, a concert hall with golden cream colored walls and an array of glass tiles hanging from the ceiling like crystal wings. Multiple tiers, three in number including the orchestra floor, hold thousands of seats. A stage in the heart of the hall holds a deep crimson piano, a DJ's setup, and a half-dozen chairs. A multitude of people mill about before being led by ushers to their seats.

"These aren't our usual concert-goers," remarks one of the staff. She's right. Wealthy socialites in evening gowns now sit alongside girls in colored wigs wearing lolita fashion. The age range is decidedly younger than usual; most of tonight's guests have probably never stepped foot in a concert hall and I'll admit that I've only been on a handful of occasions. My usual haunts are the mosh pits and the press of the crowd at heavy metal shows like those of X Japan.

It's a packed house with only a few seats available. The orchestra is filled to the brim and the upper tiers are not far behind. There are no bad seats in the house tonight; Davies Hall usually plays host to the San Francisco Symphony so its acoustics are top tier. A few lucky guests sit on the terrace to the sides of Yoshiki and company. While technically behind the performers these seats are the closest to Yoshiki. Wherever your seat might be you have a commanding view of the stage.

As the lights dim a group of musicians file on stage and take their seats. There are six in total and each holds a violin, viola, and for one, the cello. A video begins to play on the screen behind the stage introducing Yoshiki. For many in this room there is no need for introduction; his name is the sole reason they've entered the hall. They wait patiently as the opening notes of the song "Forever Love" begin to fill the room. Soon a man walks on stage and takes his place at the head of the piano. The moment he enters is the moment the crowd erupts.

This is definitely not your usual concert.

The set list spans many years and many albums. Yoshiki's opening song "Forever Love" is a X Japan classic. This was followed by the one song that a large number of Americans have heard whether they knew its origin or not: The 2012 Golden Globe Awards theme. Yoshiki's side project Violet UK makes its appearance with the song "Rosa" accompanied by a woman whose voice rivals the angels.

Toshi, one of Yoshiki's bandmates and vocalist for X Japan, appears on stage during "IV." For some this is not a surprise; the April 25 stop in Costa Mesa had Sugizo appear and lend his violin talents and word of Toshi's guest appearance was leaked as well. A short exchange between Yoshiki and Toshi occurs:

"What are you doing here?" asks Yoshiki.
"I wanted to see you," Toshi replies.
"What song do you want to do?"
"Well, we only practiced one song."

That song was "Tears," a song Yoshiki originally wrote for his father who had died. Following this Yoshiki spoke about X Japan's breakup and how lead guitarist Hide died not too long after. X Japan has faced many tragedies over the years and they took their toll on the group. Yoshiki entered a deep funk and was only roused from this slumber by his homeland, Japan. The tenth anniversary of the Emperor's reign was nigh and Yoshiki was asked to compose a song. This song would come to be known as "Anniversary."

Something more unique to this stop was "The Birthday Song." "Happy Birthday to you." Yes, that birthday song. One of Yoshiki's friends and his family are in the very front row of the concert. The clan matriarch's birthday is very near and what better way to celebrate it than a special serenade? How many people can boast that they've been sung to by an international superstar?

Yoshiki again spoke of the dearly departed X Japan members Hide and Taiji, in addition to his father. This time he had a message: "Before it's too late, please give your love to someone you care for." We often take the presence of others for granted and any reminder to open up and give a bit of thanks is welcome. This led into the 2006 tribute song "Without You" which played alongside video from the days showcasing some of X's highest points.

Following this was a seamless transition to "Art of Life." The effects board and laptop that had been next to him all night came into play with an overdub style as he took a section of piano playing, warped it, and played it back just to play on top of it. The original "Art of Life" is almost thirty minutes and is something all fans should listen to if they have not. This abbreviated version starts at about the midway point in the song and clocks in at ten minutes. I started to headbang a little when Yoshiki begins his piano solo. Not full headbanging, more of just a nod, but it really gets to you. Powerful stuff.

Now nearing the end of the concert, Yoshiki introduced his accompaniment. Unofficially, they are the "Yoshiki Sextet." He added his thoughts: "Sextet? Am I hearing things correctly? *laugh* I really like that name." It was at this point that he announced a X Japan show in the heart of New York entertainment, Madison Square Garden. Although this won't be the first time that X Japan will have played in the arena, you can be sure that come October 11th, they will not disappoint.

The night was finished off by "Endless Rain," a sorrowful power ballad about lost love. One part of the song spoke of a dream being over. Just like that the entrancing night ended and normal lives resumed. There were many bouquets thrown onstage and even a US flag bearing San Francisco upon it which Yoshiki picked up and held aloft. Toshi returned onstage and the two of them stood flanking the flag. Yoshiki may have been born in Japan, but he calls the United States home all the same. The customary cry of "We are X!" reverberated throughout the crowd as we rose our hands crossed above our heads. I'm sure some of the newly minted fans were a little confused at the sight.

As people streamed out into the lobby there were many well-wishes from the crowd and selfies to prove "I was there." Groups took photos of each other with Yoshiki's trademark grand piano in the background. Certainly a true mark of a metal concert, or in this case, a metal-turned-classical concert. A lot of the venues I have been in are clubs or the odd ballroom; none have been quite as nice as this was.

Of course, there's one other thing that was on my mind and I had the chance to ask the man himself. "Will you return to San Francisco in support of X Japan's new album?" He replied "We'll definitely try." Yoshiki, I'm holding you to that.

Many thanks to Yaz Noya and Chase Wang for making this all possible.

Sekai Project's description of the story:

After 60 years of peace, the mana crafting civilization Ruzenheid came to an end. An unknown enemy attacked, and destroyed, Ruzenheid Castle. Princess Selfine was able to escape the burning ruins with the help of Ritona, her childhood friend, who created a teleportation craft.

However, instead of finding salvation, they found themselves deep in a strange forest.

This is their story – a story of strangers in a strange realm trying to make it back home.

Alice in Dissonance is currently working on Fault Milestone Two.
